  Bordered with Leshan, Yaan in the southwest, Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in the northwest, Chengdu has a population of 10.82 million, including 4.645 million urban residents and ranking in 4th post behind Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing. Chengdu boasts of moderate climate, fertile land, profuse local products and booming economy with the honorable title of “Tianfu” (land of abundance).

  Qingbaijiang, Longquanyi, Xindu, Wenjiang), four cities(Dujiangyan, Pengzhou, Chongzhou, Qionglai), six counties(Pixian, Dayi, Xinjin, Shuangliu, Jintang, Pujiang ).

  In 2005, GDP of Chengdu amounted to 237.1 billion yuan, an increase of 13.5%compared with the last year, and personal average income amounted to 11359 yuan. Total volume of retail sales of social consumable amounted to 99.92 billion, gross import 1.86 billion USD, an increase of 43.4% and 24.1% respectively compared with the last year. Chengdu ranked in 3rd post on the amount of personal salon cars.

  With over 2300 years history, Chengdu is among 24 historic cities in first batch authorized by the State Council. As early as the 4th century BC, Kaiming Dynasty of Ancient Shu Kingdom removed its capital here. And the city name Chengdu(literally meaning “becoming capital”) originally derived from “ shaped into a county in one year, a capital in two years ” recorded in removal of emperor Taiwang in Zhou Dynasty. 311 BC, In Qing Dynasty settled its capital in Xianyang, and city wall was established in Chengdu with 12 Li (6KM) perimeter long and 7 Zhang (23.3M) high. Chengdu city was completely shaped. In West Han Dynasty, Chengdu’s brocade business was well-known nationwide, and an officer was designated for administrating brocade business in appropriate Jinguan city(officer in charge of brocade business), hence Chengdu was so called “Jinguan city” and “Jin city”. After the period of the Five Dynasties, the emperor of Shu Dynasty Yu Chang commanded to plant lotus on city wall, Chengdu was surrounded by beautiful flower and got another alias as “Lotus city”. In ancient time, Chengdu was a city full of flowers with many brooks, bridges and tresses. In 19th century, a French tourist appraised Chengdu as “Oriental Paris”. Chengdu was one of sources of Bashu Culture. In 141 BC, the prefect of Shu eparchy Wen Weng established schools in Chengdu, initiated that school established by local government in Chinese history. Since then Study of Shu got booming, and classical city culture of Chengdu was formed and developed. Zhimi period in Sui and Tang Dynasty, paper making of Chengdu took the lead nationwide. “Yizhou jute paper” of Chengdu was designated in imperial edicts, nobility conferred titles and Xiaoyang Library in Tang Dynasty. Chengdu also was one of invention sources of Chinese Engraving Printing. The five classics, analecta and poem collections applied with woodcarving printing craft were originated from Chengdu in Tang Dynasty. In Song Dynasty, Chengdu was among three principal printing bases nationwide entitled “the first printing under heaven in Song Dyansty ”. Chengdu was also known as the city of arts and crafts. Lacquerwork, Sichuan brocade, Sichuan embroidery, purl products and bamboo intwine with ceramic rough were favored by people nationwide. In Tang and Song Dynasty, music, singing, dancing and opera of Chengdu enjoyed high reputation obtained with honorable title “the supreme opera under the heaven”. Multiple transitions in long history provide Chengdu with profuse world-famous cultural relics, historic sites and sceneries, so its tourist sources have characteristic features of Chengdu: first: rich human landscapes: 172 human landscapes, including 6 national key historical and cultural sites under government protection, 33 provincial historical and cultural sites under government protection; Second, all-around natural landscapes; Third, concentrated tourist sources distribution; Fourth, superior geographic position. Chengdu was in tourist scenery formed by Jianmen Shu Rd., Jiuzhaigou, Leshan, Emei Mt. , Three Gorges, etc. scenic spots. It’s an ideal holy land for tourists.
